About the Oyster Perpetual: The Oyster Perpetual is a reference in the watchmaking world. Developed in 1931, it was Rolex’s first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch. The direct descendant of the original Oyster, the Oyster Perpetual brings together three of Rolex’s founding watchmaking accomplishments: the chronometric certification awarded to a wristwatch for the first time in 1910, the waterproofness of the Oyster watch unveiled in 1926 and the self-winding movement via Perpetual rotor patented in 1931. The Oyster Perpetual continues to embody the founding vision of Rolex's founder, Hans Wilsdorf, and is considered today the quintessence of Rolex excellence. Nowadays it is proposed in different dial variants, the colours created for the Oyster Perpetual range start life as a lacquer, which must be meticulously applied in a controlled-atmosphere environment to avoid dust and other contamination.The brass plate of the dial base receives layer upon layer of lacquer, six in all, to form a regular, uniform surface. The last step is varnishing and polishing to bring out the full brilliance and depth of colour. The various inscriptions are then pad printed, and the hour markers and crown riveted by hand. The dial, gleaming in its perfection, is all set to take its place on top of the movement at the watch assembly phase.
