Ōtsuka Lōtec is an independent Tokyo watchmaking atelier founded by Jiro Katayama, known for reviving and reinterpreting the satellite-hour display — a mechanism historically found in night clocks. Rather than a conventional rotating hour hand, the brand's calibers use orbiting numeral disks paired with fixed markers, engineered entirely in-house and built around Japanese-made components, including some of the smallest ball bearings in the industry. Production is extremely limited, with each model produced in small numbers out of Japan. For collectors, Ōtsuka Lōtec represents a rare intersection of horological tradition and micro-brand independence — mechanically inventive, visually distinctive, and largely unseen outside specialist circles.
The No. 5 KAI refines Ōtsuka Lōtec's original No. 5, first released in 2012, reworking its satellite-hour architecture inside a 40.5mm stainless steel case. A domed sapphire crystal, reaching 4.6mm in height, exaggerates the depth of the rotating hour disk and independently running seconds display, casting deliberate shadows across the dial's layered components. The hour and minute indications are shifted to the right side of the dial, a modern adjustment addressing how cuffs can obscure a watch face. Powered by a Miyota base movement fitted with an in-house satellite module, the piece offers roughly 40 hours of power reserve and comes finished on a calfskin strap.
